Storm Damage to Roofs: What to Do After a Storm in Ayrshire
Ayrshire gets its share of severe weather. Here's how to check your roof safely after a storm and get repairs in motion quickly.
Ayrshire's coastal and upland locations mean the region is exposed to some of Scotland's most significant storm events. Westerly gales, named storms and heavy rainfall all put roofs under pressure — and problems can appear quickly after a storm passes.
Stay safe — do not go on the roof
After a storm, roof surfaces may be wet, damaged or structurally compromised. Do not attempt to access the roof yourself. Use binoculars to check from the ground, or ask a professional to inspect it safely.
Step-by-step: what to do after storm damage
Check for immediate internal damage
Go inside and check for any active leaks or ceiling staining. If water is coming through, contain it with buckets and move valuables. Check the loft if it's safe to access.
Inspect from the ground
Walk around the outside of your property. Look for missing tiles or slates, disturbed ridge tiles, damaged guttering, or debris on the roof. Binoculars can help you see the roof surface more clearly.
Photograph everything
Take photos of any visible damage — on the roof, around the property and inside. This is important for any insurance claim. Include a timestamp if possible.
Contact your insurer
If the damage is significant, contact your home insurer to start the claims process. They may want to send their own assessor before you commission repairs.
Call a roofer for urgent repairs
If your roof is exposed or water is getting in, don't wait. Get a roofer out to provide temporary weatherproofing or permanent repairs as soon as possible. Call IC Roofing on 07856 094070.
