Gutter Problems Homeowners Often Ignore
Gutters seem minor compared to the roof itself, but blocked or broken gutters cause significant and expensive damage over time.
Gutters are easy to overlook — they're up high, they're not glamorous, and a problem with them doesn't always result in an obvious indoor leak. But neglected gutters are one of the most common causes of preventable property damage in Ayrshire.
Common Gutter Problems
Blockages from leaves and debris
In Ayrshire's climate, gutters collect leaves, moss, grit and debris quickly. A blocked gutter can't drain, so water overflows or backs up under the roof covering. Check gutters at least once a year — more often if there are trees nearby.
Sagging guttering
Guttering is held by brackets fixed to the fascia. Over time, brackets work loose or rot in timber fascias. A sagging run of guttering collects water in the dip rather than directing it to the downpipe, and puts stress on the whole section.
Leaking joints
The rubber seals at gutter joints degrade over time. A leaking joint drips water repeatedly onto the same spot on a wall or path, staining masonry and potentially causing damp.
Overflowing during heavy rain
If your gutters overflow every time it rains heavily, they may be blocked, misaligned, undersized for the roof area, or have a blocked downpipe.
Cracked, split or damaged sections
uPVC guttering can crack through impact or thermal stress. A cracked section will leak rather than drain correctly.
Downpipe blockages
Blockages are often in the downpipe rather than the gutter run itself. A blocked downpipe can cause water to back up the whole gutter and overflow.
Why Gutters Matter
Functioning gutters protect your property by directing rainwater away from walls and foundations. When they fail:
- Water runs repeatedly down the same stretch of wall, causing damp and masonry erosion
- Overflows can cause flooding at the base of walls
- Water trapped in the gutter can work back under the roof covering
- Fascias and soffits rot when water sits behind blocked gutters
Gutter cleaning and maintenance is one of the least expensive things you can do to protect your home. A new set of gutters is significantly cheaper than remedying the damp damage caused by ignoring them for several years.
